About Eustathius

Eustathius is derived from the Ancient Greek "Eūstáthios (Εὐστάθιος)," which is composed of two elements: "eû ‎(εὖ)" (well) and "stásis (στᾰ́σῐς)" (a standing, placing, setting, position, posture, stable). Eustathius ultimately means "steadfast, stable, firm, and steadfast in the faith." The Latin equivalents are "Constans" and its derivatives, "Constantius," and "Constantinus."

The name Eustathius has been used by several important patriarchs and bishops. Eustathius of Antioch, sometimes surnamed the Great, was a bishop and patriarch of Antioch in the 4th century. He was born in Side, Pamphylia, and became bishop of Beroea around 320. Shortly before the Council of Nicaea in 325, he became the patriarch of Antioch. He was known for his opposition to the Arians, a group of Christians who denied the divinity of Jesus Christ.
