Jurga, the feminine form of Jurgis, traces its roots to the ancient Greek word "Geṓrgios (Γεώργῐος)." This word, in turn, originates from "geōrgós ‎(γεωργός)," meaning "tilling the ground, fertilizing." The name's etymology can be further traced to "gê (γῆ)," meaning "land, earth, country, soil" and "érgon ‎(ἔργον)," meaning "deed, doing, action, labor, work, task."

The name Jurga initially gained prominence in the West during the 11th century due to the Crusades. Its popularity was further enhanced by the widespread veneration of St. George and the Golden Legend in European courts during the thirteenth century. In Germany, Jurga enjoyed popularity since the Middle Ages, though its usage declined later on.
