Jurjus

Jurjus, the Arabic form of George, finds its roots in ancient Greek. Its etymology stems from the elements geōrgós (γεωργός), translating to "tilling the ground, fertilizing," and further derived from gê (γῆ) (land, earth, country, soil) and érgon (ἔργον) (deed, doing, action, labor, work, task).

In essence, Jurjus embodies the concept of a land-worker or farmer. The name's introduction to the West during the Crusades played a pivotal role in its popularity. The devotion to St. George and the widespread influence of the Golden Legend in European courts of the thirteenth century further contributed to its widespread use. While the name has enjoyed popularity in Germany since the Middle Ages, its prominence in Britain emerged later, following the accession of George I of England in the eighteenth century.
