About Oedipus

Oedipus, a Greek name with a haunting history, is derived from the words οἰδέω (swell) and πούς (foot), meaning swollen foot. According to legend, Oedipus was a prince whose fate was foretold: he would murder his father and marry his mother. Fearing this prophecy, his father ordered him to be left to die on a mountain.

Miraculously saved, Oedipus was raised by the King of Corinth, unaware of his true parentage. When he learned the prophecy, Oedipus fled his foster home to prevent causing harm. However, fate intervened; he unknowingly killed his birth father, King Laius, and fulfilled the first part of the prophecy.

Upon returning to Thebes, Oedipus answered the riddle of the Sphinx, becoming king and unwittingly marrying his own mother. The tragic truth later emerged, leading to his mother's suicide and his self-inflicted blindness. Oedipus's name has become synonymous with tragedy and the complexities of destiny.
